R19 Annual General Meeting Update

On January 13, 2021, we held the 2020 Rhodes 19 Annual Class Meeting. It was very well attended and we had a great discussion on several of the proposals detailed below. We received votes from 95 members. Since this vote was taken without proxies, these results accurately represent the class.

 

Voting Results –

  • Approval of 2019 class meeting minutes – Approved
  • Proposed Class Officers – Approved
  • 2020 Annual Dues $0 – Approved
  • 2021 Annual Dues $35, or $0 if no regattas are held – Approved
  • $75 per boat stipend, with a minimum of $1,500 total for the 2021 National Championship – Approved
  • By Law Changes
    • Change B 12.00.02 – Approved
      • To – The Person in Charge either a) must have campaigned a Rhodes 19 either during 25% of the current racing season within the territory of the fleet they represent as helmsman, b) have been  a Member of the Rhodes 19 Class Association for two consecutive years immediately prior to the current year, or c) have been a past district or national champion as helmsman, or d) not yet reached their 25th birthday by the first day of the regatta. If the Person in Charge is not the Helmsman, then the Helmsman is subject to the same criteria.
  • Following B 12.00.03, add: – Approved
      • Any ISAF Sailor Classification (http://www.worldsailingywc.org/tools/documents/classificationcode-%5B432%5D.pdf) Category 3 sailor participating in a class sanctioned event either a) must have sailed a Rhodes 19 either during 25% of the current racing season within the territory of the fleet they represent, b) have been a Member of the Rhodes 19 Class Association for two consecutive years immediately prior to the current year, or c) have been part of the winning team (helmsman or crew) of a past Rhodes 19 district or national championship.
      • Neither helmsman nor crew shall accept a payment or fee specifically for participating in a race.
  • Change B 12.02 – Not Approved
      • From – The minimum total crew complement per boat shall be three for all races.
      • To – The minimum combined weight of all crew and helmsman shall be 425 pounds.

 

Since the proposed change to by-law B 12.02 did not pass, and given the robust discussion on this topic, we have drafted an alternative proposal for your consideration. Per class rules, after you have had 30 days to review and consider these proposed changes, we will conduct an electronic vote.

  • Existing
    • B 12.02 – The minimum total crew complement per boat shall be three for all races.
    • B 12.03 – The names of the crew on each boat, including Helmsman, shall be specified in the regatta registration form. Any substitutions beyond those names require the written consent of the judges.
  • Proposed
    • B 12.02 – The total crew complement per boat, including Helmsman, shall be no less than two for all races.
    • B 12.03 – The total crew complement shall be declared at registration, shall apply for all races, and shall not be increased or decreased for any reason.
    • B 12.04 – The names of the crew on each boat, including Helmsman, shall be specified at registration.  Any substitutions will require the written consent of the judges.

Southport, ME – Fleet Resurgence

Fleet 33 is back in action!  The fleet was created in the 1970s when six Rhodes 19s were racing in the summer on the Sheepscot Bay off Southport Island in the Mid-Coast of Maine.  During the 1980s and 1990s the fleet dropped down to three boats who raced actively in open class races with J-24s, Christmas Cove-21s, and various other types of boats using the Portsmouth Yardstick.  Fast forward to the summer of 2020 and the fleet is alive and kicking with seven Rhodes that were on the starting line.

Despite Covid, our Rhodes fleet participated in several open class races and also had a few Rhodes only races.  The first big race of the season was the annual Around Southport Island race co-hosted by Boothbay Harbor and Southport Yacht Clubs.  This is an open reverse handicap pursuit race in which the slower classes start first, the faster boats last, and if everybody sailed perfectly we would all finish at the same time.  Seven Rhodes from our fleet participated in a fleet of twenty boats.  Unfortunately for the Rhodes there was a wind hole halfway through the course and all the fast classes (the J-80s, J-24s, etc.) caught up to us way too soon.  Other weekend races saw a good Rhodes turnout.  A Rhodes 19, Rhodes Among Thorns, won the Southport Yacht Club end of season race, the Mark Island Trophy Race (actually, this year we got in three races in one afternoon), beating out five other Rhodes, a Soling, a J-24, a Sonar, and three other boats.

Perhaps due to Covid most of our Rhodes teams were family affairs (mom, dad, and the two kids or husband & wife or dad, son, and niece).  It was great to see families enjoying Rhodes 19s and sailing.  We hope to keep the momentum going and expand our Rhodes fleet next summer.

Proxy Process
To be valid, an annual meeting must be attended by Active Members, in person or by proxy, who
represent at least 1/3 of the Active Members in the Association. A proxy must be prepared by an Active
Member and received by the Rhodes 19 Class Association Secretary at least seven days before the
annual meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting, then please send an e-mail to the Class Secretary at
jshoreman@gmail.com. In that e-mail, please include your name, sail number and the person to whom
you are giving your proxy (for example: “I, NAME, sail number ####, give my proxy to Class Member
Name who will be attending the Annual Meeting of the Rhodes 19 Class Association”). This proxy is for
establishing a quorum for the meeting. Voting will be electronic and all members who qualify under
Article VII, C 7.00.01 of the Class Association constitution (each Rhodes 19 shall be entitled to only one
vote) will have an opportunity to vote regardless of whether or not they attend the annual class
meeting.

Proposed Amendments By-Laws
These require a 2/3 majority vote to pass (Article XIII, C 13.00.04) – Only class members may vote.

o Change B 12.00.02
§ From – The Person in Charge either a) must have campaigned a Rhodes 19 either

Registration
Due to the impact of Covid-19, all 2019 members have been renewed automatically for 2020. If you
were not a member in 2019, and would like to become a new member of the class, and vote at the 2020
Annual Class Meeting, then be sure to register at http://rhodes19.org/fleet-activity/join-us/ on the class
website or through https://www.regattaman.com/. Please encourage any of your fleet members that
might not already be a part of the class to also register. If you are not a 2020 member of the Rhodes 19
Class and do not qualify under Article VII, C 7.00.01 of the class constitution (each Rhodes 19 shall be
entitled to only one vote), then you cannot vote at the annual meeting.

 

2020 Nationals Postponed

Rhodes 19 Class members,

Greeting from your 2020 Rhodes 19 National Championship regatta committee!  As promised, our committee met on June 1st to assess the viability of holding the 2020 Nationals.  We have some bad news and some good news.

 

First the bad news.  We concluded that in the current environment, we would be unable to put on an event worthy of Nationals.  Reason are many, and at a high level include, 1) uncertainty around participation (particularly for travelers), 2) limitations on the ability to run a top notch regatta with limited RC resources (the CYC signal boat Pegasus is not even going in the water this season), and 3) the near certainty that shoreside events would be limited or perhaps not possible at all.  So regrettably, the 2020 Nationals is cancelled.

 

As to the good news, we have secured alternative dates for next year.  Mark August 17-20, 2021 in your calendars.  The 2021 Nationals regatta will again hosted by Fleet 5 and the Corinthian Yacht Club, and the entire 2020 regatta committee has agreed to stay on and finish the job we started.  So circle the dates, and we’ll look forward to seeing you next summer in Marblehead.

 

One final note – we understand that Class President Mike Lane and the class officers will plan to hold the 2020 Annual Meeting on Zoom.  So keep an eye out for details on that.

Rhodes 19 2020/2021 National Championship Co-chairs

Schreibers win 2019 National Champions

The 2019 Rhodes 19 National Championship wrapped up Saturday in Hull Bay, MA with the 36 boat fleet completing eight races in light to moderate conditions.  Chris, Debbie, and Christopher Schreiber won the regatta with a steady scoreline of 2-(7)-1-1-3-2-2-3 for 14 points.  Taking 2nd with 28 points was Dave Nelson who sailed with his son and daughter, and finishing 3rd was Nat and Jim Taylor sailing with Yati Harsono with 30 points.  Rounding out the top five was Hingham’s Joe Berkeley in 4th with 33 points and Wilson Kaznoski in 5th with 35 points.  It should be noted that of the top five boats, four were sailing with family crews!

 

Hosted jointly by Hingham and Hull Yacht Clubs (Rhodes Fleet 46), the first two days of the regatta were raced in light winds with the race committee doing well to get two races in each day.  The final day was a beautiful sunny 12-17 knot northeasterly that saw four good races completed.  The regatta saw five different boats winning races in the eight race series and clean racing with only one protest heard over the three day event.
